Acronym - A word formed by the initial letters of a name, as in WAC for Women's Army Corps, or by combining initial letters or parts of a series of words, as in radar for radio detecting and ranging, or as in MoWIN for the Missouri Watershed Information Network. Acronyms are useful for abbreviating our communications, but they are often confusing, exasperating or downright mystifying.
